Devata - the Nymphs of Angor Wat
When I first visited Angkor Wat in early 1993, I fell in love with the Devatas/Apsaras at first sight. I had no idea that I would soon be photographing them all, because their conservation soon became part of Germany´s contribution to the UNESCO programme for the preservation of Angkor. Thanks to the German Apsara Conservation Project (GACP), of which I was co-director until 2005, I was able to take advantage of the best lighting conditions for my photographs. Experts have not yet been able to determine who the Apsaras represent, of whom there are about 1,800. There is a consensus that most of them are portraits of living women.
